A fatal crash that took place on the State Road 82 resulted in the death of a teenage girl. The fatal accident happened on Wednesday, May 6. It occurred in Leigh Acres in the afternoon and was reported to the authorities around 4 p.m.
According to the details shared by the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred when a westbound sedan on the S.R. 82 failed to take stock of a vehicle that had stopped due to traffic ahead. This second vehicle was a van. As the sedan failed to slow down, the driver of the sedan attempted to steer clear of it. The sedan swerved aside but the driver of the vehicle failed to completely avoid the van.
The sedan ended up clipping the van. The impact of the contact veered the sedan into the eastbound lanes. It was then that it collided with an eastbound pickup truck.
A 16-year-old Fort Myers girl was driving the sedan at the time of the accident. She also had a passenger in her vehicle at the time who was also identified as a 16-year-old female. The driver of the sedan sustained only minor injuries in the three-vehicle accident. Her passenger, however, incurred critical injuries and died of her injuries.
The driver of the van was identified as a 45-year-old Fort Myers man. The pickup driver was also identified as a Fort Myers male aged 22. Both drivers remained largely uninjured in the accident.
Following the accident, Florida Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies conducted on-site investigations of the crash. For the purposes of investigation, the S.R. 82 remained closed for several hours between Alabama Road and Grant Boulevard.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing. It remains to be seen if the negligence of the sedan driver or the driver of the van caused the crash.
