A man lost his life in a two-vehicle accident that occurred on Florida’s Turnpike in the St. Lucie County. The incident involved a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer. The victim who died in the crash was the driver of the tractor-trailer.
According to the details shared by the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on Wednesday, August 19. Both the truck and the tractor-trailer involved in the incident were traveling southbound on the Florida’s Turnpike when the crash took place.
As the two vehicles drew close to the Mile Market 145, the tractor-trailer sideswiped the pickup truck. The collision caused the driver of the tractor-trailer to lose control of the vehicle. As he did so, the vehicle veered towards a side, collided with a guardrail, and overturned at a high speed.
The crash caused the tractor-trailer driver to sustain critical injuries. By the time the first responders and paramedics arrived on the scene of the crash, the driver had succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene of the accident. FHP has not released the identity of the driver so far, pending notification to the next-of-kin. However, FHP has confirmed that the driver was a 50-year-old male from Jensen Beach.
The pickup truck which was sideswiped by the tractor-trailer had two occupants in it at the time. These included a 56-year-old male driver from Pompano Beach and a passenger aged 21. Both remained largely safe in the incident and had no injuries to report.
Following the incident, FHP shut down the southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike. This was done so that the authorities could conduct on-site investigations and cleanup. The lanes were reopened a few hours later.
FHP continues to investigate the incident. Once the investigations conclude, it will be clearer exactly how and why the tractor-trailer driver ended up colliding with the pickup truck. If you’re involved in a wreck, contact our Florida truck accident attorneys right away.
