The police in Largo responded to a crash in the early morning of May 3. At about 2:14 am, they received reports of an accident on the US-19 Overpass. The crash involved a wrong-way driver which is never a good sign. Wrong-way accidents tend to be very serious and often leave their victims severely injured or even dead. This proved to be the case this morning.
A woman was driving her vehicle Southbound in the Northbound lanes of US-Highway 19 at about 2 am this Sunday. As she neared 66th Street, she collided with a car that was traveling Northbound.
When the police arrived at the scene, they found one of the passengers in the wrong-way car had already died. They were pronounced dead at the scene. Two people in the wrong-way vehicle – the driver and a rear passenger – were taken to the local hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries. The driver and passenger in the other car were also transported to the hospital. They too suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The police had to shut down the highway for a short while to clean up the wreckage. They are also investigating the accident to see what caused the driver to proceed down the highway in the wrong direction.
Often, when we see a wrong-way crash, it tends to involve alcohol or drugs. The police have not confirmed yet whether impairment played a role in the crash. There have been no statements made yet from the victim’s family.
Once the investigation is completed, there may very well be charges filed against the woman driving the wrong-way vehicle. Her name has not yet been released.
